Mickey Gasper is hitting .378 since the Red Sox called him up on August 17th. That’s a .525 OBP, a 1.000 slugging percentage and 8 home runs in 16 games.
No typo.
A career backup with almost no MLB track record has been the best hitter on the planet for three straight weeks.
Tyler Milliken broke down just how absurd this run has gotten:
Since Mickey Gasper was initially recalled on August 17th, he leads the league in:
OBP: .525
SLG: 1.000
OPS: .1.525
ISO: .622
xwOBA: .558
wRC+: 300One of the most shocking runs from a player I’ve ever seen. We’ve come a long way from his parents waiting for that first hit. pic.twitter.com/CfBk6Fk87H

Since the recall, Gasper leads all of baseball, not just the Red Sox, in OBP, SLG, OPS, ISO and wRC+. Boston called him up because Masataka Yoshida and then Willson Contreras got hurt. Now he’s outproducing Aaron Judge’s rate stats on a nightly basis.
It gets weirder. One analyst pointed out that Gasper’s OPS over any 16-game stretch is the best by a Red Sox hitter since 2010:

Multiple outlets have landed on the same visual this week because it does all the work for you. Gasper has 8 home runs in his last 16 games. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has 8 home runs all season, in 126 games.

That’s the whole story in one screenshot. A part-time first baseman is out-homering one of the sport’s best players over the same stretch, and it’s not close on a rate basis.
Boston’s rotation has needed saving all summer, even while the front office’s turnaround has been the bigger story. For three weeks now, the lineup has been saved by someone nobody saw coming: a guy who was a roster afterthought back in July.
Nobody thinks .378 with a 1.000 slug holds up. Not even Gasper thinks that.
September was supposed to be about running out the clock. Instead, the most must-watch at-bat in Boston belongs to a guy almost nobody outside his own family expected to be here.
Regression can wait its turn.
