Fireside Chats #56: Where we ride the roller coaster that is the Boston Red Sox 2009 season

I almost titled this episode "where Paul gets tossed around by Rick Porcello, but I resisted. Just when you think we're out, they win three out of four and pull you right back in, with flair no less. Let's face it. This team will be in contention to the wire. They won't pull away nor will they go away. But this week's series in Texas marks another important milestone.

Poll: Red Sox Playoff Confidence Meter

New Poll Question:
After the worst of all possible outcomes from the most critical six game road stretch of the season, where do you think the Red Sox playoff chances stand now?
  • Only 6.5 back with 6 left to go against New York. I can still taste the division.
  • We're still tied for the Wild Card lead, just get us in the door and Beckett/Lester will close it in October.
  • We'll find a way in, but we are not a World Series caliber team.
  • Did someone mention football season? The free fall out of the playoff race has begun.
Color me as shocked as anyone that this team went all "2006" on us despite brilliant outings from Josh Beckett and Jon Lester when they had to have them. So where do you see 2009 ending up?

As always, new poll is up to the right...vote away and argue it out in the comments.

Fireside Chats Pre-game Special: It’s Yankees, It’s Red Sox, It’s Sunday Night Baseball on MVN

Can things really have gotten that much worse since the last time we talked? Well, at least we all now know that David Ortiz "did not have sexual relations with that women...." or "has never bought or used a steroid". It's been a gutwrenching week for Red Sox fans. But a win tonight could start the righting of the ship. Remember, the Red Sox are still a game plus up in the Wild Card.

Poll: What is your reaction to David Ortiz’ inclusion on the 2003 positive PED test list?

New Poll Question:
What is your reaction to David Ortiz' inclusion on the 2003 positive PED test list?
  • He's no better than Bonds, Arod or Clemens. He used and there's no coming back.
  • Thanks for the "tainted" memories.
  • Not shocked, just dissappointed. He can still make right by coming clean.
  • Who cares, everyone did something in this era.
  • Just keep performing and I'll come up with a reason not to crucify him.
These aren't the only options that anyone has a right to feel in regards to this situation, but I think everyone can associated loosely with one of the buckets.

As always, new poll is up to the right...vote away and argue it out in the comments.

Fireside Chats #55: Where Paul may or may not have been slipped a PED last night

Just another week in Red Sox Nation.  Ho, hum...David Ortiz on steroids, Red Sox dominate the trade deadline talk (again), the Rays and Yankees on the horizon.  Joe Haggerty joins us to break it all down.  How many days until Patriots kickoff?  Yeah right....

Fireside Chats #54: Where Daisuke is about to get the Lugo treatment

Hell hath no fury like a Julio Lugo scorned or a Daisuke Matsuzaka questioned as the case may be.  This week's full of talk of Adam LaRoche, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and trade deadline silliness in the follow up to our pre-pre trade deadline show, we bring you our pre-trade deadline episode of Fireside Chats.

Poll: What should Theo do at the deadline?

New Poll Question:
With the trade deadline approaching and rumors flying, where should Theo and the front office focus their efforts?
  • Package prospects including Lars Anderson and young pitching to SD for Adrian Gonzalez
  • Buchholz and the farm for Roy Halladay
  • Keep pushing for Victor Martinez
  • Pull the big trigger on a larger Martinez/Cliff Lee package
  • Still looking for a full time short stop
  • Minor tweaks, but LaRoche was enough of an addition to make this team playoff ready
  • Stand pat, we're good to go as is.
Go big or go home? or play it conservative?

As always, new poll is up to the right...vote away and argue it out in the comments.

Fireside Chats #53: Where Paul says goodbye, and Tim says hello

Boston Red Sox podcast on MVN Radio, Episode #53 where Paul says goodbye (to Julio Lugo) and Tim says hello (to Clay Buchholz)

Episode #53
Hosts: Paul Testa, Tim Daloisio
Guests: none

The All-Star game came and went without a Tim Wakefield appearance, and it appears we won't see our All-Star until August as a nasty lower back strain has knocked Tim Wakefield to the DL in favor of a returning Clay Buchholz.

Lots of roster moves since we last talked, including the "goodbye" to the much maligned Julio Lugo (hint...we aren't sad to see him go).  Jed Lowrie and Mike Lowell are back, but is it all enough for the Red Sox to stand pat at the trade deadline?  Hear Paul and I give thoughts in our Pre-Pre Trade Deadline Special segment.

And right on queue...there's John Henry tweeting away...

Fireside Chats #52: Where Paul goes on a Nomar rant worth the price of admission

Some people were filled with emotion upon Nomar Garciaparra's return to Fenway Park, but not the cold heart of one Paul Testa who instead felt disgust. Paul and I react to the Nomar lovefest at Fenway Park this week as well as Tim Wakefield's Lifetime Achievement Award 2009 All-Star nod.

Poll: Red Sox Reunion?

New Poll Question:
Which former Red Sox would you most like to see on the team this year?
  • Nomar Garciaparra
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Manny Ramirez
  • Curt Schilling
  • Derek Lowe
  • Johnny Damon
Once again, more a hypothetical exercise than reality.  But given the recent homecomings of Lowe and Nomar, I wanted to pick at the heartstrings a little to gather public sentiment.
