Curt Schilling was un-Schilling-esque in an 8-3 loss against the New York Yankees (21-24).
The Boston Red Sox (31-15) were behind early as Schilling gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Sox never caught up.
An RBI single by Derek Jeter that scored Johnny Damon and a Hideki Matsui homerun to right field that scored Jeter gave Andy Pettitte all the cushion and comfort he needed.
Pettitte (3-3) then cruised on to throw five consecutive scoreless innings and ended his night going seven innings on eight hits, one run that was earned, one walk, and two strikeouts.
Schilling (4-2) on the other side of the hill continued to give up runs every inning until the fifth finally blanking the Yankees. Schilling gave up a run in the second, third, and fourth that made the score 6-0 by the time he finally settled in.
Schilling lasted only six innings on 12 hits, six runs, five earned, no walks, and three strikeouts.
In Schilling’s last two starts have been dismal giving up 20 hits and 10 runs. In this start, Schilling location was beyond miserable and he struggled not to find the Yankees’ bats all night.
The Sox added one run in the sixth and two in the eighth but it was not enough as the Yankees put up runs in the seventh and eighth ending the game at 8-3.
The Yankees had 16 hits total in the game and left the Red Sox without the satisfaction of taking two out of three against them.
With the win the Yankees have brought the Sox division lead over them back to 9.5 games.
Boston will have the day off tomorrow as they fly to Texas to take on the Rangers.
Dice-K (6-2, 4.06 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night at 8:05 p.m. ET against Brandon McCarthy (4-4, 5.82 ERA).
