Before Monday’s contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox made three moves to clear some more names off the roster.
Allen Webster and Christian Vazquez were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket and Deven Marrero was reassigned to the minor league training camp.
The moves make the roster at spring training down to 43, including two injured pitchers in John Ely and Steven Wright.
Webster has been lackluster on his four starts with 12 innings of work under his belt. During those starts, he allowed seven runs while walking seven and striking out eight. He won’t be making the squad out of spring training, but makes a great backup if injuries do occur.
Vazquez impressed with his arm and his bat in only eight games. In 10 at-bats, he hit .500 with a home run and three runs driven in. His best throw was catching Xavier Scruggs stealing by nearly 10 feet.
Marrero will be a solid utility/backup at short in a couple seasons, but still needs to work some on fielding. He finished with a .333 average to go along with eight strikeouts and five walks in only 21 at-bats.
