According to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald, a shoulder injury could land Jed Lowrie on the disabled list.
“Seventeen days had passed since Jed Lowrie ran into left fielder Carl Crawford while pursuing a fly ball, and still, the Red Sox shortstop was feeling a ‘dull ache’ in the back of his left shoulder.
But after striking out in the first inning of last night’s 4-2 win against the Rays, the pain worsened.”
Per the report, Lowrie initially feared a subluxation of his shoulder. Luckily, those concerns were laid to rest after a medical examination by the team’s medical staff. Still, he’s expected to receive additional tests today to determine the root cause of his shoulder pain. Last week, he underwent an MRI, and the results came back clean. It’s not clear if a second MRI will be among the tests being ordered today.
While Lowrie hasn’t been officially placed on the DL; there’s speculation such a move will be made shortly. Last night, utility infielder Drew Sutton was pulled from a game with AAA Pawtucket after seven innings. Though this may turn out to be only a precautionary measure, these types of moves are typically “lead-ins” to more proactive transactions. As soon as more information becomes available, we will provide it.
