GAME NOTES
Last night was a frustrating game. It was game the Red Sox very much should have won, many times, but obviously in the end couldn’t pull it out. We are all very high on this team right now, but last night’s game brought me down a bit. Now I’m not saying I’m panicking and suggesting they trade the entire farm system for Carlos Beltran and Ubaldo Jimenez, not by any means. But the team has very few losses lately and I really can’t remember another that made me angry like last night. Any of their losses in the last six weeks, I’ve just shrugged my shoulders and quietly turned off the TV or radio. Last night I angrily turned off the radio and stomped off to bed at 2 AM. Of course, a win tonight and I’ll be skipping off to bed just like I’ve become accustomed this season.

PLAYER OF THE DAY
On July 26, 1951 Red Sox outfielder Clyde Vollmer hit 3 home runs including a game-winning one, as the Red Sox beat the White Sox 13-10. Vollmer began his major league career with the Reds in 1942 and played for the Senators before moving on to Boston in 1950. Vollmer’s best season was 1951 when he hit 22 HRs and drove in 85 to go with a .251/.346/.456 batting line. Vollmer only hit 47 HRs in his other 9 seasons combined so 1951 was quite career year for him. Overall, he played in 685 major league games and was a .251/.335/.402 career hitter. He served in the Army in World War. He died in Kentucky in 2006.
