It might not be fair to say Bartolo Colon is back to his Cy Young-self just yet with only two starts under his belt, but it is fair to say Colon is pitching very effectively for Boston.
After last night’s performance, Colon dropped his ERA to 2.25 and improved his record on the season to 2-0. Colon went two innings longer than his previous start and had constant movement on his fastball all night.
With that being said, why rush Clay Buchholz back up to the Majors? Baseball, to me anyways, is all about streaks and who is hot and who is not, so I say ride Colon’s wave and let Buchholz sharpen some skills down in Pawtucket.
Buchholz could work on being more consistent with movement on his fastball, take advantage of some rest, and be sharper and stronger in the playoff stretch run for Boston. Meanwhile, the Red Sox can get Colon back to major league form by showing confidence in Colon that he can pitch at the Major League level again, and most importantly have a replacement already intact for Curt Schilling come the 2009 campaign because we all know Schilling is not coming back.
This situation is nothing but a good situation for the Red Sox right now. A former ace who is coming back into form in Colon and an up and coming ace in Buchholz who just needs a little tweaking right now.
Again, that wave (Colon) is 2-0 as of the moment.
