During an interview yesterday J.D. Drew made interesting comments about his future with the Red Sox and in baseball. While the league has shifted and older players are being forced to take lower value contracts or forced into retirement Drew appears ready for this on his own.
“I think every player has a mindset that one day it’ll be enough,” he said. “It’ll be 14 years in the majors for me when this contract runs out. As things kind of go you get mixed emotions. I want my kids to see the game a little bit, and kind of remember the game. I know my son will, and my daughter will probably a little bit as well, but there are on-going mixed emotions.”
He currently holds 44.2 WAR according to Sean Smith at BaseballProjection.com and that ranks 229 currently among all position players. That places him about 10-20 points from the heart of a hall of fame debate, but also 29 spots ahead of Jim Rice. Unless he has two 5+ WAR seasons he will be a member of the hall of the really good. That’s fine by me and will be glad to see these “last” two years in Boston.
