Major Leage Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announces that game 5 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays will be postponed until a later date, after calling a rain delay in the sixth inning, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on October 27, 2008. Bud Selig is serious about adding another Wild Card team to each league and he expects it to occur in 2012. The general managers are behind this idea, as well as the owners. How about you though?

In FireBrand of the American League’s newest poll, we ask: “Should MLB expand the playoff format?” (You can vote in the poll to the right of your screen)

There are strong proponents on both sides of this question, but from the fans I have spoken to, they do do not seem to like it. The proposal would expand playoff baseball from eight to 10 teams. They’d play the existing wild card in a yet-to-be determined format (Short series? one-game showdown?) with the winner advancing to the League division Series to face one of the three division winners.

So what do you think? Could this be good for baseball? Had this been in place for 2010, it would have meant the non-division winner with the second best record would have played the best-placed runner-up (i.e. the Yankees this year) for the right to play The Twins. [fixed, thanks]

And as far as our last poll is concerned, the readers of FireBrand AL voted for who the most untouchable Red Sox prospect was. It was a very close poll with Casey Kelly edging out Jose Iglesias. Both players are future All-Stars, so it’s no surprise they votes were so tight. Here are the results for the previous poll.

Poll Question: Who is the Red Sox’ most untouchable prospect?

  • Casey Kelly – 35%
  • Jose Iglesias – 32%
  • Ryan Kalish – 14%
  • Anthony Ranuado – 8%
  • Anthony Rizzo – 7%
  • Felix Doubront – 4%

So if the Red Sox decide to pull off a blockbuster Thanksgiving Day trade for Adrian Gonzalez, it will be interesting to see which of these six players still remain.
