Let’s put on our reality hats and try to do some prognosticating. (Vote to the right of your screen)
With the Red Sox reportedly meeting with Carl Crawford, Adrian Beltre and Jayson Werth this week, fans are beginning to get excited and hoping to see a big signing soon.
Especially when it comes to Crawford, who most Red Sox fans are pining for and willing to break the bank on. The question is, who will the team actually go and acquire?
Do you think they will go seven years and spend a ton of money on Crawford? Will they take the lesser, possibly more cost-effective Werth? Will the front office swoop in and re-sign Beltre and hope he keeps his 2010 form?
Maybe even a dark horse on Cliff Lee? What do you honestly think will happen? Maybe it’s none of those guys and maybe it’s no one at all. But if this team doesn’t sign a big name, there might be a riot somewhere in New England.

And as far as our last poll is concerned, the readers of FireBrand AL were pretty adamant that exceeding the luxury tax is acceptable if it were for a difference-maker. Here are the results for the previous poll.
Poll Question: Should the Red Sox Exceed the Luxury Tax Threshold?
- Yes, but only if it’s for a difference maker – 46%
- No. It’s not a guarantee to win anything and the tax is 40 percent – 27%
- Yes. This team has the money and needs to start spending money like a big market club – 20%
- Forget spending money and try to flip some of these prospects for fairly-priced stars – 7%
So there you have it. Pay the tax if it means getting a guy like Carl Crawford. I disagree with that logic and voted no, but the readers have spoken so let’s hope the Red Sox are listening.
