Boston did not do it literally, but figuratively as David Ortiz and the rest of the Red Sox (46-25) pounded journeyman Buddy Carlyle (1-2) for seven earned runs through two innings en route to a 11-0 win against the Atlanta Braves (38-35).
Carlyle’s start looked bad from the get-go and got progressively worse as J.D. Drew leadoff the game with a solo homerun, Manny Ramirez hit an RBI double, and Coco Crisp added a three run homerun, third in this series, giving the Sox an early 5-0 lead.
Ortiz added to the crooked number first inning for the Red Sox with his 13th homerun of the season that scored Drew who previously doubled off of Carlyle earlier in the inning pushing the lead to 7-0.
The Braves starting pitcher only lasted 3.2 innings, giving up seven earned runs, on nine hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
While the bashing of Carlyle was happening quietly Julian Tavarez (5-4) was throwing a perfect game through three innings, although, Tavarez finally gave up a base hit in the fourth to Willie Harris. Tavarez ended his night going 7 innings, on three hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Drew left the game in the second inning as a precaution for tightness in his right quad. There is no status on Drew at this time.
Ramirez gave the Red Sox more insurance homering to right field in the seventh making the score 8-0.
Although eight runs were not enough for the Red Sox as they continued to score runs in the eighth on a Dustin Pedroia RBI double and a two-run blast served up by utility player Eric Hinske catapulting their lead to 11-0.
Boston ended the night with 15 hits and have a had a combined 34 hits total in the series off of Atlanta pitching. Hopefully, Drew will be fine after exiting the game because of his right quad considering he and Pedroia have been driving this offense as the one and two hitters in the lineup.
