10/4: That’s all, folks

GAME NOTES: Clay Buchholz gets a tune-up before the regular season ends. Keep an eye on the Tigers/Twins. If both win or lose, a playoff game will have to occur Tuesday afternoon -- meaning the Sox won't know if Game 1 of the ALDS is Wednesday or Thursday. Personally, I'm hoping the Tigers pull it out. It'll get the Sox time to finalize plans, and Detroit has the better team on paper to beat New York.

BOS 11, CLE 6: Bats Boost Beckett Past Indians

The Boston bats had Beckett's back last night, in a big way. Alliteration aside, the Red Sox starter struggled through five innings, but came up with the win, his seventeenth of the season, as the Sox took a third game from the Cleveland Indians. With only one game left in the regular season, the quiet Red Sox backs woke up, as Aaron Laffey and the rest of the Tribe's pen were lit up, on the way to an 11-6 loss.

TOR 8, BOS 7: Red Sox Clinch Playoffs With Loss to Blue Jays

Adam Lind and the Blue Jays came out firing, beating Clay Buchholz and the Red Sox, 8-7, on Tuesday. However, the Red Sox will cry themselves all the way into the post season, as the Angels worked their magic on the Texas Rangers, sealing a wildcard playoff berth for the Bo Sox.

After a dominant start to the month, Clay Buchholz recorded his second less than stellar start, going eight hits and seven earned runs over five innings. Toronto took advantage of his missteps, launching five home runs off the young righty, with six bombs overall for the evening.

9/29: Time to Clinch

GAME NOTES: Okay, enough with the slump. Let's pop the bubbly.

BOS 10, KC 3 – Clay Delivers, KC Flops… Again

Red Sox 10 - Kansas City 3

Apparently, playing spoiler isn't as fun as the media makes it out to be. You get burned more often than you succeed.

With little more than a week left in the season, the Royals look to put the finishing touches on another disappointing campaign.

KC has played admirably in the last few days, though tonight they were clearly overmatched by a young fireballer at the top of his game. In the end, the Royals got their scheduled paychecks, while the Sox got additional restitution for Tuesday's loss and draw one step closer to the Wild Card.

9/24: Buch-wild

GAME NOTES: Sorry for the late game thread, fellas... but boy, what a job this Clay is doing, eh?

Injuries, Blessings, and Manny Not Being Manny

A Pair of Injuries

On Monday, Junichi Tazawa was placed on the 60-day disabled list due to what has been described as a mild groin strain.

While the groin gives the Sox a formal reason to DL Tazawa, the pitcher had reportedly reached his innings limit, according to the Red Sox official web site. The move also helps make room for Chris Woodward.

The infielder will fill in for Nick Green, who is dealing with a back issue that has manifested as dead leg.

BOS 3, BAL 1: Clay Out of Control

Both Clay Buchholz and Jason Bay weren't feeling quite right last night, but somehow emerged as the heroes of Friday night's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

Buchholz's six strong innings, combined with Bay's 34th home run of the year, lifted the Red Sox past the Birds, 3-1.

9/18: A test for Buchholz

GAME NOTES: Clay Buchholz locks horns with the Orioles and Jeremy Guthrie. It seems like Buchholz keeps facing the Orioles. Of course, he has that no-hitter... but the Orioles have also bombed him unrelentingly. Although Buck looks like he can be our No. 3 in the playoffs, every start is still a test.

20/20 Vision

A few years back, I was introduced to a simple site on the Internet that gave me a different and useful lens on the baseball season. Doug's Stats (www.dougstats.com) looks much like it did the day I stumbled on it in 2003. It hasn't gotten a Web 2.0 facelift, there are no fancy charts or running commentary. In fact, most of the stats can be gotten from any sports site with a "stats" tab in their MLB section. But there was one link on the front door of Doug's home on the Internet that grabbed my attention.
