Poll: How the mighty have fallen…

New Poll Question:
Who will end the year with greater offensive production?
  • David Ortiz (currently -11.2 Runs Above Average)
  • Julio Lugo (-1.9 Runs Above Average)
  • George Kottaras (-3.1 Runs Above Average)

We'll be using Fan Graph's Park Adjusted Batting Runs Above Average based on wOBA as our measuring stick.  In season ZIPS projections have Ortiz ending the season at .244, 21 HR, 89 RBI.  If he can get there, I think he'll take this race.  But is that too optimistic a projection based on what our eyes are telling us today?

As always, new poll is up to the right...vote away and argue it out in the comments.

David Ortiz dropped to 6th in the lineup

The lineups are out for tonight's game against the Minnesota Twins and David Ortiz has been dropped to 6th in the batting order. Mike Lowell will be getting the night off. Here's the lineup as tweeted by Amalie Benjamin.

1. Ellsbury
2. Pedroia
3. Drew
4. Youkilis
5. Bay
6. Ortiz
7. Varitek
8. Bailey
9. Lugo

Tito to drop Ortiz in the lineup?

Stumbled on this interesting tweet from Joe Haggerty (a regular guest of Fireside Chats) after tonight's game.

I think it's time. Since coming back from his "break", Ortiz has hit a measly .158 with nine, count them K, K, K, K, K, K, K, K, K, in twenty one plate appearances. That's a remarkable 43%. Of course, he does have his only home run of the season (whippeee). Granted he's faced a ton of left handed pitching since his hiatus. But it is time to make a change for the good of all parties involved.

If I were drawing up tomorrow's lineup, here's my card:

1. Ellsbury
2. Pedroia
3. Drew
4. Youkilis
5. Bay
6. Ortiz
7. Lowell
8. Varitek
9. Green

Time for Tito to take some action.

Should Sox trade Delcarmen for Nick Johnson?

MLB: APR 13 Phillies at Nationals
Peter Gammons went on Mike and Mike's ESPN Radio show this morning. Thanks to Hacks with Haggs, there is a transcript of the proceedings. An interesting tidbit:
Washington with their 2-16 bullpen are trying to move Nick Johnson and Austin Kearns and some of their semi-attractive veteran players to get relief pitchers. I know they offered Nick Johnson to Boston for Manny Delcarmen. That hasn't happened and may not until the Red Sox make a decision on David Ortiz.
This is a deal the Red Sox would instantly do if Big Papi was at his current level of production on July 31.

It's May 22, however.

It still begs the question: should the Red Sox do the trade? If so, when?

BOS 5, TOR 1: Sweepin

Toronto may sit atop the A.L. East Divisional standings presently, but one thing is for sure. The Blue Jays haven't done anything against the teams that matter most.

Looking Up

MLB: MAY 14 Red Sox at AngelsWhen the Toronto Blue Jays came to town with a 3.5 game lead over the Boston Red Sox, it would be fair to characterize the first meeting of the two teams this season as surprisingly critical. One team was going to make a statement and thus far, it has been the Red Sox speaking the loudest.

In light of David Ortiz' home run last night, I thought it was a good opportunity to look at the collection of things working in the Red Sox favor since returning East and get a pulse from "all you FireBrandamaniacs" out there.

BOS 8, TOR 3: Homer happy

David Ortiz is finally smiling again. And so is Red Sox Nation.

BOS 2, TOR 1: Dealin

At first glance, the A.L. East division leading Toronto Blue Jays were less than impressive. Tim Wakefield, however, couldn't have been more so.
