It has been 10 days since the Boston Red Sox signed Stephen Drew to the one-year contract, but he was called up Monday and was in the starting lineup at shortstop.

The 31-year-old struggled with Triple-A Pawtucket as he went 2-for-13 with five strikeouts with one double and zero runs and RBI. He also had a couple errors while in the minors.

The moves were made possible with Mike Carp being placed on the 15-day DL before the series opener against the Cleveland Indians with a fracture in his right foot. The first baseman/outfielder had been struggling with a .214 average with no home runs on the
season. He did hit five doubles while driving in five runs.

Garin Cecchini was also optioned back to Pawtucket after getting a chance to play when Dustin Pedroia was thrown out of Sunday’s contest for arguing balls and strikes. Cecchini went 1-for-2 with a RBI double to put the Red Sox up 4-0 in the seventh inning. The third base prospect was already on the 40-man roster.
