The Boston Red Sox signed some additional infield help on Monday with the right-handed Ryan Roberts inking a deal. Roberts opted out of a deal with the Chicago Cubs on March 27 and the Red Sox needed some infield help with Will Middlebrooks ending up
on the DL this past weekend.
The 33-year-old played 60 games over four stints with the Tampa Bay Rays and finished hitting .247 with six doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs. He is a career .245 hitter with 46 homers in 510 career contests. In those games, Roberts has played 217 games
at third, 197 at second, 36 games in left field, three games at first, one game at short and one game in right field.
With the lack of right-handed power in the lineup, the right-handed batter is hitting .266 with a .341/.444/.785 stash line against lefties. This will likely make him a platoon with Jonathan Herrera at third for the time being.
In order to make room on the 40-man roster, Steven Wright was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL while recovering from sports hernia surgery. Brock Holt was also optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket without making a single appearance at the major league level after being recalled Sunday morning.
